Yesterday I watched both the Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises for the first time, and boy, was I impressed. As a kid, I had the old batman movies on video (the ones with mr freeze, poison ivy, the penguin. I think Tim Burton directed them?) and they were great films with all star casts that could be enjoyed by the whole family. However, because of this, they lacked…impact. It was separated from reality by this comic book style setting and theres a clear difference between real life and Gotham in these movies. The Christoper Nolan trilogy does away with the comic-esque style and exchanges it for a ‘shit, this seems possible’ style. Begins showed us his origin under ra al ghul and how he donned the costume. The dark knight took a turn for the darker, with the illogical and psychotic joker, whilst simoultaneously showing the fall of harvey dent. Both of these ideas seem mad, yet if you think about it, very plausible in real life, which is worrying. Nolan knows this, so his atmosphere feels engrossing and enticing. Rises was fucking awesome, by far my favourite (and not because i was on the 3rd row watching anne hathaway in a catsuit……ahem) but because of Bane, because of the twists, because of the sheer brilliance of it. You should really see the new one if you liked the first one, it feels more resemblent than it does to the dark knight, despite the title. Begins is all about batman, knight is all about the joker and dent, rises is about bane and gotham. Not to mention Tom Hardy steals the show.
